Tickets are now open to volunteers for the talk ‘Collecting or Competition?’, which has been organised by the Friends of Strawberry Hill. This talk, given by Martin Stiles will look at the similarities between the collections of Sir Robert Walpole in the 18th Century and Horatio, 3rd Earl of Orford (2nd Creation) in the 19th Century and the response to these ambitious projects by their respective children – Horace Walpole and Lady Dorothy Nevill.
Our speaker, Martin Stiles has worked with and for historic properties and their families for his entire career. He spent 12 years working for the Walpoles at Wolterton Hall, their ancestral home in Norfolk; then for the National Trust at Petworth House and then at Knole. He currently works for English Heritage at the Wellington Arch and Apsley House and is now researching Ancestral Portrait sets and the ways in which aristocratic families have represented themselves through their art & architecture from the 16th to the 18th Century.
Tickets for this talk are £15 and include a complimentary glass of wine. They can be booked at http://ow.ly/Net130hB82E
