This book brings together the proceedings of the symposium organised by the GRHAM (Research Group in Modern Art History) and the Collection Seminar on 26 and 27 October 2020. In an innovative interdisciplinary perspective, the twelve contributions question the practice of collecting at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. While the rationalism of the Enlightenment, fond of taxonomy, has sometimes led to a simplified history of collecting, these contributions underline the great diversity of practices in parallel with the standardisation of certain places, objects or status of the collector.
