Vasemania at the Huntington: The Chelsea Vases
Anne Anderson
Tuesday, 7 July 2020, 18:30 (BST)
Over the course of barely three years Joseph Duveen was able to amass a mega collection of Chelsea vases for Henry Edwards Huntington. But why did Huntington want them or more correctly how did Duveen persuade him that he needed some fifty vases? The answer lies in Huntington’s collection of full length 18th century portraits by Reynolds and Gainsborough. He had the finest collection of these in America, now he would have the finest 18th century English porcelain to complement them. He would have the ‘Best of the Best’.
With a first degree in archaeology and a PhD in English, Anne Anderson was a senior lecturer in Art and Design History at Southampton Solent University for 14 years. She has held several prestigious fellowships including Fellow of the Huntington Library, CA (2008/09 and 2018/19) which enabled her to study the Chelsea vases. Her paper ‘Vasemania: The Huntington Gold Anchor Chelsea Vases’ was published in the British Art Journal (Vol. XVIII, No.2, Autumn 2017). Anne specializes in the history of collecting, her other academic papers investigating chinamania c.1860-1900.
