In the UK, some independent museums are currently at risk of closing down when their collections contribute to the richness and diversity of our heritage. SocHistColl is dedicating an autumn series to independent museums and their collections to encourage everyone to look beyond national collections. Our third and last session is a presentation of Compton Verney in Warwickshire by its current director Julie Finch. A Grade I listed building remodelled by Robert Adam, with breath-taking gardens and a Chapel designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, Compton Verney houses a varied collection of Neapolitan paintings, Chinese objects, Northern European paintings, British art and British folk art, and the Marx-Lambert collection of English popular art.

Julie Finch:

Lincolnshire born, Julie Finch was director of Bristol Museums, Galleries and Archives for seven years, developing Bristol’s new museum, M Shed. She then became the project director for the new Museum of Western Australia in Perth. She moved back to the UK in 2014 to join the Cheltenham Trust with a view to oversee six of Cheltenham’s cultural assets (including the Wilson Museum and Art Gallery, the historic Town Hall and the Pittville Pump Rooms). Julie Finch became director of Compton Verney in 2018.
