CHROMOTOPE summer school in Florence
19-23 September 2022

The ERC-funded project CHROMOTOPE hosted by Sorbonne Université in collaboration with the University of Oxford and the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM) is inviting applications for a 5-day summer school on the topic of ‘Translating Colour’. This summer school co-organised by Stefano Evangelista (University of Oxford) and  Charlotte Ribeyrol (Sorbonne Université / PI of CHROMOTOPE) will take place in Florence from 19 to 23 September 2022.

Colour is still sometimes perceived as a universal given. However, it is evidently also a cultural construct, subjected to issues of (un)‘translatability’ which open up a crucial space for dialogue and comparison across cultures and  disciplines. In keeping with the scientific objectives of CHROMOTOPE, which explores the literary and artistic impact of the 19th-century ‘chromatic turn’, participants will engage in various small-group activities led by the CHROMOTOPE team and international experts. The aim of the summer school isto study colour and in particular  chromatic materiality from an interdisciplinary perspective and to unveil the multiple modalities (whether linguistic, chronological, spatial, technical and intermedial) of colour translation. It will comprise keynote sessions, talks, seminars, workshops and visits. Participants will have the opportunity to present their own research and to learn new approaches and academic skills in an inspiring setting.

We welcome applications from doctoral and postdoctoral researchers working on colour-related topics in all disciplines (arts, humanities, sciences, social sciences), not restricted to the 19th century. CHROMOTOPE will cover travel and accommodation expenses of all successful applicants.

Applicants should submit the following documents to the project email address (chromotope@gmail.com) by 30 May 2022:
– A CV
– A short statement (max. 500 words) explaining how the applicant’s colour research would contribute to the summer school
– The name and email address of one referee
