Giles had generously agreed to sit on the Society’s advisory committee and we were looking forward to his lively input. As former Director of the Dulwich Picture Gallery (1979 to 1996), Director of Royal Collection Studies (operated by the Attingham Trust) and Associate Lecturer at the Courtauld Institute of Art, Giles contributed enormously to the fields of the history of collecting, and the history of museums and country houses.  He was a brilliant teacher and lecturer, who always added wit and humour to his in-depth scholarship; and he was a generous colleague, constantly willing to share his knowledge and discuss ideas.
He will be sorely missed by very many people.
